Mobile World Congress 2012 – Day 2

The Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC 2012) kick-started on February 27 with a series of announcements of smartphones that featured some of the new features and amazing technologies. The big players were the leading mobile companies like Samsung, LG, HTC, and the others. We did a roundup of some of the major announcements made on Day One of the Mobile World Congress 2012.

Day Two of the Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC 2012) was more than what was expected, with the announcement of new tablets and smartphones. More than 60,000 participants who came to experience the once-a-year event, found the opportunity to engage and connect with smartphones and tablet freaks.

The second day at MWC 2012 included keynote speeches in the morning, several workshops and breakout information sessions post lunch, and concluded with the industry’s annual Global Mobile Awards Presentation at night.

The most eye-catching event of Day Two was perhaps Nokia’s announcement of a 41-megapixel camera, which almost got everyone’s attention along with the announcement of new Windows Phone smartphones.

Apart from that, Android chief Andy Rubin disclosed that Google now activates over 850,000 new Android devices daily, and the Android Market currently has over 450,000 apps.

Major Announcements at MWC 2012

Here are some of the major announcements made by leading companies including Nokia and Samsung along with some new players in the mobile and smartphone market – Lava and ZTE.

Nokia at MWC 2012

Nokia released a teaser trailer few days ago hinting about the announcement of something “Pure”. Well, on the second day of MWC 2012, Nokia unveiled the successor to Nokia N8, called the PureView 808. The most prominent feature in the PureView 808 is the massive 41 MP built-in camera featuring Nokia’s PureView imaging technologies, which include high-resolution sensors and optics from Carl Zeiss.

Nokia PureView 808 features a 4-inch nHD 640 x 360 pixel display, and is powered by a 1.3 GHz single-core processor with 512 MB RAM. The 808 PureView will also feature Dolby Headphone technology and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback. Nokia will start shipping the phone in May with a price-tag of US$605.

Nokia also announced the new Lumia 610 that is basically targeted for a younger audience. Lumia 610 will run on Windows Phone Tango, featuring a 3.2-inch screen size and a 3 MP camera. The phone can also be easily integrated with Xbox Live. The price of Nokia Lumia 610 is US$254 before subsidy.

Samsung at MWC 2012

Samsung continues to focus on extending its Galaxy series, and at the MWC 2012, we saw the announcement of Samsung Note 10.1 tablet. The tablet is powered by Android 4.0 ICS with a 10.1-inch screen size with a sleek and curvy design.

Samsung Galaxy Note 1.0

Apart from the conventional gesture navigations, the Galaxy Note comes with an option to use a stylus. The user will have to shell out extra bucks since the Samsung S Pen is an extra-cost accessory. The Galaxy Note 10.1 has a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor with a 3 MP rear facing camera and 2 MP front facing camera. It also comes in Wi-Fi and HSPA+ connectivity. The Galaxy Note 10.1 will start shipping in Q2 of 2012.

Lava XOLO X900 Announced at MWC 2012

Lava, a new gameplayer in the Android smartphone market has partnered with Intel to launch their first Intel Medfield based smartphone in the Indian market. The new phone, Lava XOLO X900 is powered by Intel’s Atom Z2460 (Medfield) processor and runs on Google’s Android OS.

It features a 4.3-inch display with 1024 x 600 pixels resolution and includes HDMI, NFC and HSPA+ connectivity features. It also features a 8 MP camera with 1080p full HD recording and burst mode feature. The phone is expected to be priced at US$500.

Huawei at MWC 2012

From the announcements made by the Chinese company – Huawei, it looks like it is setting up some serious challenges. Yesterday, Huawei announced the Ascend D Quad and claimed that the phone will be able to perform better than either the Apple’s iPhone 4S or Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus.

Today, the company announced the Huawei MediaPad 10FHD, which is in fact the world’s first quad core 10 inch tablet runs. The tablet runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), has a 1.5GHz Huawei K3 quad-core processor inside, and a beautiful 10.1-inch HD IPS display. It also features a 8 MP rear camera and a 1.3 MP front facing camera.

MediaPad 10FHD

Huawei says that the new MediaPad 10FHD tablet supports HSPA+ downloads of up to 82 Mbps per second, and also supports LTE. The tablet will be available in the second quarter of 2012 worldwide.

ZTE at MWC 2012

The Chinese mobile manufacturer announced several Android smartphones including ZTE Orbit, ZTE Kis, Skate Acqua, Blade II, Mimosa X, ZTE N91, V68, V66, and ZTE Mifavor. It also announced two quad core tablets – ZTE PF100 and ZTE T98.

The ZTE Orbit is an entry-level phone that runs on Microsoft’s Windows Phone Tango, which is going up against as a competitor to the Nokia Lumia 710 and Samsung Omnia W. The smartphone features an 5 MP cameras with LED flash included, and a 4-inch display screen. It comes with 4GB in-built storage and 256MB RAM. The phone is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2012.

ZTE Orbit

The tablets – ZTE PF100 and ZTE T98 share similar specifications except that the PF100 has a 10.1-inch screen while the T98 comes with 7-inch screen size. Both the tablets are powered by 1.5GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, 2 megapixel front facing camera, and 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

End of Day Two at MWC 2012

Well, that’s it from MWC 2012 – Day 2. Those were some of the major announcements made by existing as well as new companies. The major announcement was the Nokia 41 MP camera, which is simply surprising.
