The Tech Labs verdict
Audacity is a practical starting point for recording and editing audio without paying for the core application. For a podcast, interview or narration project, the useful question is whether you can capture, edit and export your own material reliably.
Record a short sample with your real microphone. Listen on headphones for clipping, background noise and uneven levels before recording a full session. Keep an untouched copy of the original recording so that editing decisions remain reversible.
A free editor cannot repair every recording problem. Better microphone placement and a quieter room often matter more than another effect. Also check the cost and licence of optional plug-ins separately; availability inside a software ecosystem does not mean every extension is free. This listing is based on the official product description rather than an audio-quality laboratory test.

Before you choose
Are all Audacity plug-ins free?
No. The core application is free, but optional third-party plug-ins can have their own prices and licences.
Can software fix a bad recording?
It may improve some problems, but clipped or missing audio cannot reliably be restored. Make a short test recording first.
Should I keep the original files?
Yes. Keep an untouched recording and a project backup before applying destructive edits or exporting.
