Blender

Free plan

Free, open-source software for building and animating 3D scenes.

Good fit for Learning and producing 3D work

Facts checked November 5, 2026

The Tech Labs verdict

Blender removes the software licence cost from learning 3D. That makes it a strong option for students, independent creators and small teams willing to invest time in a broad application. It is not a shortcut around modelling, lighting or animation skills.

Before committing a project, build a small scene with the same kinds of assets you expect to use. Check that imports, materials and exports survive a round trip to your other tools. For team work, agree the Blender version, asset locations and add-on policy first; incompatible project assumptions cost more time than choosing a renderer.

Our recommendation is based on the project's documented scope and licence. We have not measured render times or certified third-party add-ons. Budget for learning and suitable hardware even though the core application is free.

Choose it if

  • You want to learn 3D without a recurring software licence.
  • You can invest in a broad creative workflow.

Before you choose

Is Blender free for commercial work?

The core software is free and open source. Check the separate licences of downloaded models, textures and add-ons used in your project.

Is Blender a good first 3D tool?

It can be. Start with a small modelling project and learn navigation before tackling a full animation.

Does free software mean cheap rendering?

No. Complex scenes can still require capable hardware or a paid rendering service.
