A flexible code editor for developers who want to choose their own tools and extensions.

Good fit for Editing code across languages

Facts checked November 5, 2026

The Tech Labs verdict

Visual Studio Code is a sensible starting point when you want one editor for several languages. Its value comes from combining code editing, a terminal, debugging and source control in one workspace. The trade-off is configuration: a language extension can add editing support without installing the compiler, interpreter or database your project needs.

Start with the official language extension and a small, trusted extension set. Open a real project, run its tests and step through one failing function before deciding that the setup fits. A polished demo is less useful than seeing whether your own dependencies and debug configuration work.

This is a documentation-based assessment, not a timed performance benchmark. Extension choice, project size and remote development setup can change the experience considerably.

  • You work in several languages and want a configurable editor.
  • You are comfortable installing project-specific runtimes.

Before you choose

Is Visual Studio Code the same as Visual Studio?

No. VS Code is an extensible editor. Visual Studio is a separate IDE with a different installation and feature set.

Does installing VS Code install my programming language?

Not necessarily. Install the runtime or compiler your project requires, then configure the appropriate extension.

Do I need a paid AI subscription?

No. Ordinary editing does not require an AI subscription. Check the separate terms for any AI service you enable.
