Give the task a boundary

State the question, intended audience and time period. Explain whether you need a summary, comparison or decision. A narrow request makes omissions easier to detect than an open-ended request for everything about a topic.

Provide source material when you have it. Ask the tool to distinguish what the material says from its own interpretation. Keep a list of questions the source does not answer rather than encouraging the assistant to fill every gap.

Separate discovery from verification

An AI search tool such as Perplexity can help surface sources. A conversational assistant such as Claude can help organise supplied material or develop a draft. Neither role removes the need to check the evidence.

Open each source that supports a decisive claim. Confirm the author, publication date, relevant passage and any conditions. Prefer the original document where possible. A summary of a summary can lose the qualification that changes the conclusion.

Keep a claim ledger

For a consequential comparison, use a simple table: claim, source, date, confidence and unresolved question. This makes contradictions visible and prevents a polished paragraph from hiding missing evidence.

If two sources disagree, describe the disagreement. They may cover different dates, plans, regions or definitions. Do not ask a model to average incompatible facts into one apparently certain answer.

Review the draft in two passes

First check factual support: numbers, dates, quotations, names and links. Then check whether the reasoning follows from those facts. A paragraph can contain individually correct statements while making an unsupported recommendation.

Remove claims you cannot substantiate. For changing details such as software prices, link to the current vendor page and record when you checked it. Avoid inventing precision simply to make a comparison table look complete.

Protect the material you supply

Review the tool's applicable privacy and retention controls before uploading confidential documents. Share only the material needed for the task and follow your organisation's rules. A convenient workflow does not itself establish permission to disclose data.

The best result is a document whose sources and uncertainty remain visible after the AI conversation is gone. Keep the final evidence with your notes so another person can reproduce the reasoning.
